Does Hawaii accept out-of-state teaching licenses?

An out-of-state license can open a path to Hawaii certification, but it does not transfer automatically. The state decides which certificate, endorsements, tests or additional requirements apply.

Experience sets the tier

HTSB publishes a three-tier path: Provisional below three years of qualifying experience in the last five, Standard at three or more years in the last five, and Advanced at five or more years in the last eight.

Field requirements still apply

Applicants must meet the academic preparation, student-teaching and competency-testing requirements for the specific Hawaiʻi field and grade level requested.

One thing to know: Less than three years of qualifying full-time teaching in the last five years can support the three-year nonrenewable Provisional license; at least three years in the last five can support the renewable five-year Standard license; at least five years in the last eight can support the ten-year Advanced license.
