What the state says

Every certificate class affects the answer

Use every certificate class shown in the Educator Certification Online System (ECOS). Texas renews all Standard certificates together, based on the earliest-issued certificate.

  • 01

A classroom-teacher class alone requires 150 continuing professional education (CPE) hours. At least 37.5 hours must cover Texas’s five classroom topics.

  • 02

Holding an administrator or student-services class makes the total 200 hours. Principals, school counselors and superintendents also have role-specific topic requirements.

  • 03

If an additional certificate class was issued for less than the full five-year renewal period, Texas prorates the added CPE. The issue date must be checked before using the full 200-hour answer.

  • 04

Use a TEA-approved or preapproved provider, accredited college work, or another activity TEA expressly accepts. Independent study, presenting and mentoring each have percentage limits.

  • 05

All educators need disability education that includes dyslexia. Keep evidence for five years in case TEA audits it.

Some records need the agency’s help

If the state record shows a hold or a certificate type not listed here, use the agency’s guidance. We won’t match it to a similar certificate.
