What the state says
The license title sets the ordinary credit total
Iowa accepts specific renewal credits and accredited college semester credits. Generic CEUs or professional-development units are not automatically Iowa renewal credit.
- 01
Standard Teaching License: six renewal credits plus current child-abuse mandatory-reporter training.
- 02
Master Educator Teaching License: four renewal credits, reduced to two with a doctorate or specialist degree, plus the training.
- 03
Either license may use the advanced-degree route instead: a master’s or higher degree, ten verifiable years of licensed PK-12 experience and current training.
- 04
For a current license, credits must be earned after the license was issued. The renewal window opens one year before expiration, and Iowa advises applying eight weeks before expiration to avoid delays.
- 05
Applications now include citizenship or work-authorization verification. Complete that identity step only in Iowa’s official system.
