Expired Iowa teaching license

How do I renew an expired Iowa teaching license?

Iowa still calls this renewal. An expired Standard or Master Educator Teaching License uses the same requirement choices, but credits must be no more than five years old and the license does not authorize teaching while the application is pending.

What the state says

Expiration changes timing, not the license name

If the requirements are not complete, Iowa may offer an extension. The later Class E extension has additional history and progress conditions and is not automatic.

  • 01

Standard and Master Educator Teaching Licenses keep their level-specific credit totals or advanced-degree route after expiration.

  • 02

Renewal credits for an expired license must be no more than five years old on the application date.

  • 03

An expired license does not authorize teaching, even after a renewal application has been submitted.

  • 04

The official fee sources currently conflict on the ordinary renewal amount. The application system controls the current fee, so TeachPassport does not calculate it here.

When to check with the state

Some records need the agency’s help

If the state record shows a hold or a license type not listed here, use the agency’s guidance. We won’t match it to a similar license.
