The usual steps
- Create a Michigan Online Educator Certification System account
- Apply before registering for any Michigan certification test
- Submit official transcripts and preparation evidence
- Submit the out-of-state certificate and aligned work-experience forms
- Wait for the credential evaluation and complete only the tests or literacy coursework identified by MDE
What can change your path
- • Traditional preparation must include student teaching; an out-of-state alternative program must be fully completed and result in that state's standard certificate
- • Three years of successful aligned teaching can replace the MTTC requirement for the Standard certificate
- • The Professional certificate adds reading-methods coursework and three years of aligned successful teaching
- • The Temporary certificate is one-year and nonrenewable

Certificate level
Michigan's Standard certificate is valid for five years; a Professional certificate may be available with three years of aligned successful teaching and the required reading-methods coursework.
Experience can replace testing
For the Standard certificate, the applicant needs the appropriate MTTC result or three years of successful teaching under the validity of the out-of-state certificate; MDE instructs applicants to wait for evaluation before registering for a test.
Core evidence
MOECS review may require official transcripts, approved preparation and student-teaching evidence, the out-of-state certificate and work-experience forms showing alignment and success.
