Michigan teacher license transfer

How to transfer your teaching license to Michigan

Michigan evaluates out-of-state preparation, certificate alignment, successful teaching and literacy coursework for a five-year Standard or Professional certificate, with a one-year Temporary bridge when specific requirements remain.

Starting point

Does Michigan accept out-of-state teaching licenses?

An out-of-state license can open a path to Michigan certification, but it does not transfer automatically. The state decides which certificate, endorsements, tests or additional requirements apply.

Your exact route can still depend on your license type, preparation, experience, subjects, grade levels and testing history.

What can change your path

  • Traditional preparation must include student teaching; an out-of-state alternative program must be fully completed and result in that state's standard certificate
  • Three years of successful aligned teaching can replace the MTTC requirement for the Standard certificate
  • The Professional certificate adds reading-methods coursework and three years of aligned successful teaching
  • The Temporary certificate is one-year and nonrenewable

What the state says

These facts come from official sources. The state agency still makes the final licensing decision.

Certificate level

Michigan's Standard certificate is valid for five years; a Professional certificate may be available with three years of aligned successful teaching and the required reading-methods coursework.

Experience can replace testing

For the Standard certificate, the applicant needs the appropriate MTTC result or three years of successful teaching under the validity of the out-of-state certificate; MDE instructs applicants to wait for evaluation before registering for a test.

Core evidence

MOECS review may require official transcripts, approved preparation and student-teaching evidence, the out-of-state certificate and work-experience forms showing alignment and success.

Why your details matter

State websites describe the possible routes. The right one for you can depend on your license, preparation, experience, subjects, grades, tests, National Board status and compact eligibility. TeachPassport uses those details to work out your path and handle the steps it can do for you.

One thing to know: Three years of successful teaching aligned to the out-of-state certificate can replace Michigan certification testing for the Standard certificate and, with the required reading-methods coursework, can support the Professional level.
