Does Alaska accept out-of-state teaching licenses?
An out-of-state license can open a path to Alaska certification, but it does not transfer automatically. The state decides which certificate, endorsements, tests or additional requirements apply.

What can change your path
- • A regular source certificate must be renewable and based on a bachelor's degree, approved preparation and clinical experience
- • Restricted, provisional, emergency, substitute and temporary credentials do not qualify as regular certificates
- • The source credential must still be current when Alaska employment begins
- • K-3 assignments require the Alaska Reads Act K-3 Teacher endorsement

Two-year experience threshold
An educator with at least two years of teaching under a current regular out-of-state certificate may qualify for Alaska's two-year Professional Out-of-State Teacher Certificate; less-experienced applicants use the Initial route.
Route changes testing
The Initial route lists approved basic-competency and content exams, while the Professional Out-of-State route relies on the qualifying regular source certificate and completed preparation, subject to Alaska endorsement requirements.
Core evidence
Upload application documents through TEACH-AK, including official degree transcripts, preparation verification, the current regular source certificate, experience evidence and training verification. Fingerprint cards are the exception and must be mailed to the department.

Alaska currently publishes an estimated application-processing time of five to seven weeks.
