What Florida says
How this move starts
Florida provides routes based on a valid comparable standard out-of-state certificate or a valid National Board certificate.
Where the state decides
Florida determines whether the certificate, subject and training level are comparable to its Professional Certificate.
No blanket reciprocity claim
What this guide will not guess
A state pair alone cannot settle your exact credential, tests or timeline. Those answers can change with your license type, endorsements, preparation and experience. This page shows the reviewed Florida rule; the move planner uses your teaching details to narrow the checklist.
Your Virginia record
Confirm exactly what you hold
Virginia's public query covers active state teaching and educator licenses. Applicants use Virginia Licensure Online, or VALO, for status, correspondence and documents.
- •Active teaching and educator licenses issued by the Virginia Board of Education
- •License and endorsement information included in the active record
- •State-issued active credentials, excluding local licenses
Compact check
A compact route may be available
Both Virginia and Florida are listed compact members. Your credential and eligibility still have to match.

The records worth gathering first
Likely route
A current comparable standard out-of-state certificate or qualifying National Board certificate can support a comparable Florida Professional Certificate subject.
Complete application package
Florida requires official transcripts from every college or university attended and a complete copy of every current out-of-state certificate. Institutions should send transcripts through an accepted secure method or by original paper transcript; applicant-uploaded or emailed transcript files are not accepted as official.
Initial application fee
Florida publishes a nonrefundable $75 initial certification application fee per subject. Fingerprint processing and district or vendor charges are separate.
Florida's first decision
After the complete package is evaluated, Florida issues an Official Statement of Status of Eligibility. It is valid for three years and states whether the applicant is eligible for a Temporary or Professional Certificate and which requirements remain.
Fingerprint handoff
Public-school employees follow their district's fingerprint instructions. A nonpublic-school employee or applicant not seeking Florida employment should wait for an eligible Statement of Status of Eligibility and follow Florida's stated processing route.
Virginia to Florida questions
Does a Virginia teaching license automatically transfer to Florida?
No. Your Virginia credential is evidence for the application, but Florida Department of Education decides which Florida license, endorsements, tests and remaining conditions apply.
Can I use the Interstate Teacher Mobility Compact from Virginia to Florida?
Both states are currently listed as compact members. You still need to meet the compact's license and eligibility rules and apply through Florida; membership does not make the move automatic.
What should I gather before applying in Florida?
Start with your current Virginia license record, exact endorsements, preparation transcripts, experience verification and test history. Then follow the evidence requests in Florida's application.
What does the TeachPassport move planner include?
It uses your credential, experience, subjects, grades and destination to prepare likely steps, reusable worksheets and official links. You can use it without an account or save the move.
