Does Illinois accept out-of-state teaching licenses?
An out-of-state license can open a path to Illinois certification, but it does not transfer automatically. The state decides which certificate, endorsements, tests or additional requirements apply.

Credential outcome
A teacher with a valid comparable out-of-state license may qualify for an Illinois Professional Educator License with comparable teaching endorsements after ISBE evaluation.
Content tests
For reciprocity applications received on or after January 1, 2026, the applicant must pass the applicable Illinois content-area test for each endorsement sought.
Core evidence
The reciprocity route identifies a copy of the valid comparable out-of-state license and a bachelor's degree or higher from a regionally accredited institution; ISBE may request additional equivalency evidence.
