The usual steps
- Create an Alabama Identity Management account
- Apply through the ACE educator-certification system
- Identify the comparable Alabama teaching field, grade span and degree class
- Submit the valid professional out-of-state certificate and official degree evidence
- Complete Alabama fingerprint and background clearance
- Wait for an eligibility determination before taking any prescribed Alabama Praxis assessment
What can change your path
- • Alabama does not use completion of a non-Alabama preparation program by itself as the basis for this route
- • The source certificate must be professional, valid and comparable in area, grade level and degree level
- • Speech-language pathology is outside this reciprocity approach
- • Testing may be prescribed for areas carried only as an in-field, supplemental, endorsement or add-on authorization
What the state says
These facts come from official sources. The state agency still makes the final licensing decision.
Comparable professional certificate
A valid professional out-of-state teaching certificate may support an Alabama Professional Educator Certificate when Alabama offers a comparable field, grade level and degree class.
Add-on fields are different
When the comparable source authorization is an in-field, supplemental, endorsement or add-on area, Alabama can require its current Praxis subject assessment after the agency determines eligibility.
Core evidence
Plan for the ACE application, the valid professional source credential, official degree records and Alabama fingerprint or background clearance, plus any comparability material the certification section requests.
Why your details matter
State websites describe the possible routes. The right one for you can depend on your license, preparation, experience, subjects, grades, tests, National Board status and compact eligibility. TeachPassport uses those details to build your checklist and keeps checking the state’s rules.
One thing to know: The source credential—not merely completion of an out-of-state preparation program—must be a valid professional certificate; base teaching fields can transfer by comparability, while an in-field, supplemental, endorsement or add-on area can trigger Alabama's current Praxis requirement.
